Etymology
Derived from laiha (“thin, skinny”) as a byname/nickname. The exact derivation is unknown, however, although such variation is not uncommon in such given names. The place name is from the given name, possibly through a farm name (Laihela ~ Laihiala), in which the suffix -la was later dropped (but preserved in the Swedish name Laihela).[1]
