Shortened form of Serbo-Croatian Косово поље (Kosovo polje, “blackbirds’ field”), from косова (kosova), possessive form of кос (kos, “blackbird”), and поље (polje, “field”), and made into a feminine 4th-declension noun in Latvian, probably following the Albanian form Kosova.
