First attested as den Wardt off Sant in 1531-1532. Compound of kijf (“row, conflict”) and waard (“riverine island”). Compare Cabauw, Hebrecht, Kijfhoek, Kibbelgaarn, Kibbelveen, Krakeel, Krakeelpolder, Schellach and Strijkviertel.
