Etymology
First attested as catwyc op ter zee in 1398. Derived from the toponym Katwijk, aan (“on”) and zee (“sea”). Katwijk is a compound of the difficult to interpret element Middle Dutch kat (“cat, mud, ridge, lesser, low-quality”) and wyc (“village, settlement”). aan Zee was added to distinguish the settlement from Katwijk aan den Rijn.
