Etymology

First attested as catwyc op ter zee in 1398. Derived from the toponym Katwijk, aan (on) and zee (sea). Katwijk is a compound of the difficult to interpret element Middle Dutch kat (cat, mud, ridge, lesser, low-quality) and wyc (village, settlement). aan Zee was added to distinguish the settlement from Katwijk aan den Rijn.
