Küchenlatein

German

Etymology

Compound of Küche (kitchen) + -n- + Latein (Latin). First attested in Middle Low German köken latyn, Köken latin, thus seemingly a popular word ridiculing the improper use of Latin words by the uneducated (such as women and servants in the kitchen). Later used by humanists to refer to non-classical Latin.
