First attested as hellender in 1275-1280. Perhaps derived from Middle Dutch holendere (“elder, Sambucus nigra”). A compound of Middle Dutch hel (“low-lying”) and doorn (“thorn bush”) is also possible. Compare Haalderen and Halder.
