Etymology
- (Beuningen) First attested as in euuic around 855. From Middle Dutch [Term?], from Old Dutch [Term?]. Compound of Old Dutch ā (“river, watercourse”) and wic (“farmstead, settlement, village”), so equivalent to aa + wijk with umlaut. Wijk-toponyms with an umlaut are very rare in the Dutch linguistic area, but are common in Westphalia (e.g. Dellwig, Hennewich and Kettwig). Compare Meeswijk.
