First attested as de plaats buiten Amsterdam aan den Amstel den omval genaamd in 1681. Named after a former mansion. Potentially derived from omval (dilapidated house). According to an alternative reading, the toponym may refer to a sharp bend in the Amstel. Compare Omval, De Valom and Valom.
