First attested as brauwert in 1435. Calque of West Frisian Baarderbuorren, a compound of the toponym Brauwert (derived in turn from Old Frisian brâda (“broad”) and wert (“artificial mound used for habitation”)) and the plural form of buer (“house, cottage”).
