Appelscha

Dutch

Etymology

First attested as appels in 1247 and 1251. Borrowed from West Frisian Appelskea, potentially derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian appel (apple) and *skea (forest); however, the oldest attestations do not support this etymology.

  • (file)
