Finnish
Etymology 1
From *-bat, the plural of *-pa (present active participle suffix). -t, noun plural ending, is also used as the third-person plural ending in some dialects (including once in the standard language), hinting that this is originally an extension, likely to distinguish from the second-person singular. -vat is originally an eastern Finnish feature and has been standard only since the early 19th century.
Suffix
-vat
- (personal) Forms the third-person plural of verbs.
Usage notes
- Suffixed to the same stem that the first person singular has both in the present and the past tense, and in all moods.
- Colloquially, the third-person singular is often used instead of the plural.
Synonyms
- -t (dialectal; in older Finnish only in the past tense or the conditional mood)
