Etymology

Inherited from Latin -ōnea, -ōnia, feminine of -ōneus. Rare and largely unused in modern Romanian (cf. -oaică, which is common). Compare the Aromanian equivalent -oanji -oanje -onje, which is more often used, as well as Albanian -onjë, likely borrowed from the same Latin root. See also the masculine -oi.
