Etymology

From the zero-grade form *plฬฅhโ‚‚-i-, from Proto-Indo-European *plehโ‚‚- (โ€œwide, broad, flatโ€). Originally the PIE adjective most likely inflected as:

  • nominative: *plรฉhโ‚‚-i-s
  • genitive: *plฬฅhโ‚‚-รฉy-s

and the oblique stem was generalized.
