Etymology

From Old Persian *vahanam (“house”), from Proto-Iranian *wāhana (“habitation”), from Proto-Iranian *Hwah-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwas-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wes-. Equivalent to *h₂wes- + *-enom. Compare Sanskrit वसन (vasana, “dwelling, abiding”), Compare also Northern Luri هۏش (höş, “house, home”).

Related to d(p)ywʾn' (dēwān, “archive, collected writings”) (from Old Persian *dipi-vahanam), [script needed] (gyʾg /⁠gyāg⁠/, “place”) (whence Persian جا (jâ)).
