π¬π¬π¬π¬π¬π¬
Avestan
Etymology
From Proto-Iranian *daywΓ‘h (compare Old Persian ππ‘πΊ (daiva) and Persian Ψ―ΫΩ (dΓͺw)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *daywΓ‘s (compare Sanskrit ΰ€¦ΰ₯ΰ€΅ (devΓ‘)), from Proto-Indo-European *deywΓ³s.
Semantic shift from original Indo-Iranian "god". In Indo-Aryan it retains this meaning, but it changes in Old Iranian into "demon".
