π¬›π¬€π¬‰π¬Žπ¬Žπ¬€

Avestan

Etymology

From Proto-Iranian *daywΓ‘h (compare Old Persian 𐎭𐎑𐎺 (daiva) and Persian دیو (dΓͺw)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *daywΓ‘s (compare Sanskrit ΰ€¦ΰ₯‡ΰ€΅ (devΓ‘)), from Proto-Indo-European *deywΓ³s.

Semantic shift from original Indo-Iranian "god". In Indo-Aryan it retains this meaning, but it changes in Old Iranian into "demon".
