πΏππ π°π»πΏπ²πΎπ°π½
Gothic
Etymology
From πΏπ- (us-) +β *π π°π»πΏπ²πΎπ°π½ (*walugjan). The word is generally derived from Proto-Indo-European *welH-, possibly *welw-; compare *π π°π»π πΎπ°π½ (*walwjan), Latin volvΕ. The precise route of derivation from this root is not quite certain. Possible derivations for *π π°π»πΏπ²πΎπ°π½ (*walugjan) include:
- From (or closely related to) Proto-Germanic *walgΕnΔ ; the -u- would then be a svarabhakti vocal (compare πΌπΉπ»πΏπΊπ (miluks)).
- From an adjective *π π°π»πΏπ²π (*walugs) +β -πΎπ°π½ (-jan) (containing the suffix -πΏπ²π (-ugs)), perhaps meaning "wandering" or "moving/rolling about"; compare π²π°π±πΉπ²π (gabigs, βrichβ), which yields π²π°π±πΉπ²πΎπ°π½ (gabigjan, βto enrichβ) and contains the same suffix.
