Gothic

Etymology

(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: โ€œprobably get some sources up in here, Lehmann has something to say on the subject tooโ€)

Isolated in Gothic among the Germanic languages. Probably related to Proto-Germanic *tล somehow, but the exact etymology is unclear. If this is a non-Germanic loan in Gothic that was not transmitted through Proto-Germanic, its use would prove the existence of the verb *๐Œฒ๐Œน๐Œฝ๐Œฝ๐Œฐ๐Œฝ (*ginnan) as simplex in Gothic (see ๐Œณ๐Œฟ๐Œฒ๐Œน๐Œฝ๐Œฝ๐Œฐ๐Œฝ (duginnan)).

It may be a rerendering of Germanic *tล after Celtic *dลซ < earlier *dล, its exact cognate. Likewise cf. Germanic *tiz-, rerendered to Latin or Celtic dis-/*dis-. Why these were rendered as non-Germanic cognates is uncertain.
