Etymology

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 뫼〯ᅀᅡ리〮 (Yale: mwǒyzàlí), etymologically equivalent to modern 살— (me sal-, to live in the mountains) + (-i, agentive noun-deriving suffix), but never perceived as such by modern speakers.
