Etymology

First attested in the Beonyeok sohak (飜譯小學 / 번역소학), 1517, as Middle Korean ᄆᆞᆫᄃᆞᆯ다 (Yale: montolta), although a derived form is attested earlier from the 1460s. Related to synonymous Middle Korean ᄆᆡᇰᄀᆞᆯ다 (Yale: mòyngkóltá, “to make”), of which direct reflexes survive in many non-Seoul dialects as 맹글다 (maenggeulda).
