From Middle Korean 뉘〯 (Yale: nwǔy, “world; time; epoch; era”), from earlier 누리〮 (Yale: nwùlí), from Old Korean 世理 (*NWUri). Doublet of 누리 (nuri), apparently borrowed directly from Middle Korean. The pronunciation given in the Standard Korean Language Dictionary has an unexpectedly short vowel length, for unknown reasons.

1. Only used in 뉘를 보다 (nwireul boda, “(archaic) to receive gratitude from children and grandchildren”).
2. (obsolete) time, age, generation

   늙을 뉘를 모를로다 ― neulgeul nwi-reul moreulloda ― I know not when I will grow old
