Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀁𑀤𑀭 (vāṃdara), from Sanskrit *वान्दर (vāndara), a plosive-added form of earlier वानर (vānara). Cognate with Assamese বান্দৰ (bandor), Bengali বাঁদর (bãdor) and Hindi बंदर (bandar).
