Inherited from Prakrit 𑀯𑀸𑀁𑀤𑀭 (vāṃdara), from Sanskrit *वान्दर (vāndara), a plosive-added form of earlier वानर (vānara) (compare সুন্দর (śundor)). Cognate with Assamese বান্দৰ (bandor), Hindi बंदर (bandar). Doublet of বানর (banor), which is directly loaned from Sanskrit.
