Phono-semantic compound (形聲／形声) and ideogrammic compound (會意／会意) : semantic 气 (“gas”) + abbreviated phonetic 淡 (dàn, “dilute”).

From 淡 (dàn, “dilute”) in 淡氣／淡气 [19th c.], referring to nitrogen diluting oxygen in the air.
