     父(ちち)は所謂蘭医(いわゆるらんい)である。オランダ語(ご)を教(おし)えて遣(や)ろうと云(い)われるので、早(はや)くから少(すこ)しずつ習(なら)った。文典(ぶんてん)と云(い)うものを読(よ)む。それに前後編(ぜんこうへん)があって、前編(ぜんぺん)は語(ご)を説明(せつめい)し、後編(こうへん)は文(ぶん)を説明(せつめい)してある。

     Chichi wa iwayuru ran'i de aru. Orandago o oshiete yarō to iwareru no de, hayaku kara sukoshi zutsu naratta. Bunten to iu mono o yomu. Sore ni zenkōhen ga atte, zenpen wa go o setsumei shi, kōhen wa bun o setsumei shite aru.

     My father is a so-called Dutch-medicine doctor. He said he would teach me Dutch, so I learned bit by bit from an early age. I read something called a grammar. It had two parts. The first part explained words, and the second part explained sentences.
