Etymology

From 振り (furi, assigning, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb 振る (furu, to assign, to stick on, to apportion)) + 仮名 (kana).[1][2] The kana changes to gana as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First cited to 1813.[1]
