Etymology
Probably from 度 (dok6, “to measure; to ponder”) + 縮/缩 (suk1, “to withdraw; to reduce”). Alternatively, it may come from 鐸/铎 (dok6, “the name of a miser”) + 叔 (suk1, “uncle”) (Bai, 2003); compare English scrooge < Ebenezer Scrooge, Eastern Min 貽順哥/贻顺哥 (ì-sông-gŏ̤) < 馬貽順/马贻顺 (Mā Ì-sông).
