Etymology

Borrowed from Manchu ᠪᠠᡵ
ᡴᡠᠨ
(bar kun), from Written Oirat ᡋᠠᠷ
ᡍᡉᠯ
(bar kül); may be ultimately derived from a Turkic word in the form of *bars-köl meaning "tiger lake" (Li, 1999). Compare Chagatai بار‌کول (bār-kȫl), Uyghur باركۆل / Баркөл (Barköl), Kazakh باركول / Баркөл (Barköl).

Compare 婆悉 (MC ba sit) in 婆悉海, the Tang dynasty name for Barkol Lake, and perhaps 蒲類 (OC *baː ruds), the name of an ancient kingdom near Barkol Lake during the Han dynasty (ibid.).
