Etymology

(en, salt) + (so, chemical element). Calque of Dutch zoutstof, from the fact that it is a main ingredient of table salt. Coined by Japanese scientist Udagawa Yōan in 1834 in his book 遠西医方名物考補遺 (鹽素). was simplified from in the 1946 Tōyō kanji list.
