Etymology

Coined by Japanese educator and zoologist Iwakawa Tomotarō in 1884 in his work 生物学語彙 (Seibutsugaku goi, “A biological vocabulary in English, Latin and Japanese”) as a translation of English reaction.[1][2]

The ō reading for changes to as an instance of renjō (連声).
