Etymology
From a modified clipping of 任天堂, where the kanji 天 (ten, “heaven”) is replaced by 豚 (ton, “pig”), often accompanied by visual depictions of overweight Nintendo fans. Sometimes alternatively read as "ninbuta", which is said to be a corrupted compound of 任 (nin), the first kanji in "Nintendo", and 仏陀 (butsuda, “Buddha”), from the perception of Nintendo fans as religiously devoted to the company.[1]
