Etymology

今上(きんじょう) (kinjō) + 天皇(てんのう) (tennō). The former part is borrowed from Middle Chinese 今上 (MC kim dzyangX).

The shō changes to as an instance of rendaku (連濁); also read kinshō without rendaku in older texts.
