でれでれ
Japanese
Etymology
This term is part of a cluster of terms surrounding a root でれ (dere, “slovenliness? sloppiness? shamefulness?”) that is not attested on its own.
- でれる (dereru, verb), attested from 1867[1]
- でれでれ (deredere, adverb), attested from 1889[1]
- でれっと (deretto, adverb), attested from 1889[1]
- でれり (dereri, adverb), attested from 1891[1]
- でれつく (deretsuku, verb), attested from 1908[1]
Further derivation is uncertain. Possibly related to noun 照れ (tere, “embarrassment, ashamedness, bashfulness”), from verb 照れる (tereru, “to be embarrassed, ashamed, bashful”).
