Ἰλλυρία
Ancient Greek
Etymology
From Ἰλλῠρῐός (Illuriós) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā). Of obscure origin, but possibly from a conjectural Illyrian *Hullurio (“(place or tribe) of the serpent”), from Proto-Indo-European *udlós.[1] Alternatively related to Albanian *hĭwĭd-lʉh (“water snake”), from older Albanian *hud-lós. See hyll.
