Ἰλλυρία

Ancient Greek

Etymology

From Ἰλλῠρῐός (Illuriós) + -ῐ́ᾱ (-íā). Of obscure origin, but possibly from a conjectural Illyrian *Hullurio ((place or tribe) of the serpent), from Proto-Indo-European *udlós.[1] Alternatively related to Albanian *hĭwĭd-lʉh (water snake), from older Albanian *hud-lós. See hyll.
