ἐρυσίβη

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • ἐρυθίβη (eruthíbē)

Etymology

The stem of this word is also found in ἐρύσιμον (erúsimon, hedge-mustard) and ἐρυσίπελας (erusípelas, erysipelas). Traditionally considered an old s-enlargement of ἐρυθρός (eruthrós, red), which can be found in Latin russus (red, reddish-brown) and Lithuanian raūsvas (red). However, Furnée suggests a Pre-Greek origin, because of the alternation of σ/θ and the typical long -ῑ-: this hypothesis is supported also by Beekes.
