From Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʰ- (to be upset, afraid); compare ἄχνυμαι (ákhnumai). Cognate with Old Irish ad·ágathar (to fear) and Gothic 𐍉𐌲𐌾𐌰𐌽 (ōgjan, to scare).
