From ဦး (u:) + နှောက် (hnauk); the latter from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-nəw-k (“brain”). Cognate with Nuosu ꀑꆊ (o not, “brain”), Old Chinese 腦 (OC *nuːʔ), Jingpho nu' (“brain”), Drung unu (“brain; mind”), Japhug tɯrnoʁ, S'gaw Karen ခိၣ်နူာ် (khoh̀noọ, “brain”).
