From Proto-Southwestern Tai *suːŋᴬ¹ (“high”). Compare Middle Chinese 嵩 (MC sjuwng) or 崧 (MC sjuwng). Cognate with Thai สูง (sǔung), Lao ສູງ (sūng), Lü ᦉᦳᧂ (ṡung), Tai Dam ꪎꪴꪉ, Tai Nüa ᥔᥧᥒᥴ (súng), Aiton ꩬုင် (suṅ), Ahom 𑜏𑜤𑜂𑜫 (suṅ).
