From Proto-Southwestern Tai *suːŋᴬ¹ (“high”). Compare Middle Chinese 嵩 (MC sjuwng) or 崧 (MC sjuwng). Cognate with Lao ສູງ (sūng), Northern Thai ᩈᩪᨦ, Lü ᦉᦳᧂ (ṡung), Tai Dam ꪎꪴꪉ, Shan သုင် (sǔng), Tai Nüa ᥔᥧᥒᥴ (súng), Aiton ꩬုင် (suṅ), Ahom 𑜏𑜤𑜂𑜫 (suṅ).
