From Pali bhaya (“fear; fright”), from Sanskrit भय (bhaya, idem). Cognate with Modern Khmer ភ័យ (phɨy), Lao ໄພ (phai), Thai ภัย (pai). Doublet of ဘယာ (bha.ya).
