From Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁iʔ ~ *t₁ih ~ *t₁iəh (“earth; soil”). Cognate to Bahnar teh, Khmer ដី (dəy), Semai tiiq, Khmu pəte, Khasi pyrthei.[1]
