Etymology 1
From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ŋɯənᴬ⁴ (“silver”), from Old Chinese 銀 (OC *ŋrɯn). Cognate with Thai เงิน (ngən), Lao ເງິນ (ngœn), Northern Thai ᨦᩮᩥ᩠ᨶ, Lü ᦇᦹᧃ (nguen), Tai Dam ꪹꪉꪷꪙ, Phake ငိုꩫ် (ṅün), Ahom 𑜂𑜢𑜤𑜃𑜫 (ṅün), Zhuang ngaenz.
