From Japanese 旨味, うまみ (umami), from 旨い (umai, “delicious”), which describes the quality of a pleasant, savory taste. Cognate with Thai อูมามิ (uu-maa-mí), Isan อูมามิ, Khmer អ៊ុំម៉ាមី (ʼummaamii).
