From Japanese 旨味, うまみ (umami), from 旨い (umai, “delicious”), which describes the quality of a pleasant, savory taste. Cognate with Lao ອູມາມີ (ʼū mā mī), Khmer អ៊ុំម៉ាមី (ʼummaamii).
