From Proto-Tai *haːnᴮ (goose). Cognate with Thai ห่าน (hàan), Northern Thai ᩉ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨶ, ᦠᦱᧃᧈ (ḣaan¹), Tai Dam ꪬ꪿ꪱꪙ, Shan ႁၢၼ် (hǎan), Phake ꩭꩫ် (han), Ahom 𑜑𑜃𑜫 (han), Zhuang hanq, Tày hán. Compare Middle Chinese (MC ngaenH, “wild goose”), Proto-Mon-Khmer *haan (goose), Proto-Khmuic *haːn (goose).
