From Proto-Tai *haːnᴮ (“goose”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ຫ່ານ (hān), Lü ᦠᦱᧃᧈ (ḣaan¹), Tai Dam ꪬ꪿ꪱꪙ, Tai Dón ꪬꪱꪙꫀ, Shan ႁၢၼ်ႇ (hàan), Phake ꩭꩫ် (han), Ahom 𑜑𑜃𑜫 (han), Zhuang hanq. Compare Middle Chinese 雁 (MC ngaenH, “wild goose”), Proto-Mon-Khmer *haan (“goose”), Proto-Khmuic *haːn (“goose”).
