Etymology

From Pali upaddava (calamity, danger, disaster, peril; distress; misfortune; etc). Cognate with Modern Khmer ឧបទ្ទវ (ʼŏbâttôv). Compare Sanskrit उपद्रव (upadrava), from which derived Old Khmer *upadrava, ūppadrubya, oppadrabya, and Modern Khmer ឧបទ្រព (ʼupaʼtrup).
