From Proto-Tai *ŋinᴬ (“to hear”). Cognate with Lao ຍິນ (nyin), Tai Dam ꪉꪲꪙ, Shan ငိၼ်း (ngín), ယိၼ်း (yín) or ၺိၼ်း (nyín), Ahom 𑜂𑜢𑜃𑜫 (ṅin), Zhuang nyi or ri. Compare Middle Chinese 听 (MC ngjinX|ngj+nX, “laughing”), Proto-Austronesian *dəŋəʀ (whence Paiwan ladenga or langeda, Malay dengar, Tagalog dinig).
