Etymology

From Proto-Tai *ŋinᴬ (to hear). Cognate with Lao ຍິນ (nyin), Tai Dam ꪉꪲꪙ, Shan ငိၼ်း (ngín), ယိၼ်း (yín) or ၺိၼ်း (nyín), Ahom 𑜂𑜢𑜃𑜫 (ṅin), Zhuang nyi or ri. Compare Middle Chinese (MC ngjinX|ngj+nX, “laughing”), Proto-Austronesian *dəŋəʀ (whence Paiwan ladenga or langeda, Malay dengar, Tagalog dinig).
