From Proto-Southwestern Tai *fuːŋᴬ¹ (“flock; swarm; group; party”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨺᩪᨦ, Lao ຝູງ (fūng), Lü ᦚᦳᧂ (ḟung), Shan ၽုင် (phǔng) or ၾုင် (fǔng), Ahom 𑜇𑜤𑜂𑜫 (phuṅ).

Usage notes
- Rarely used of inanimate things.
- Groups of elephants are called โขลง (klǒong).
- Now, applying the term to other living things than non-human animals is somewhat archaic, and applying the term to human beings can be considered derogatory and offensive.
