Etymology

From Pali nibbāna (“extinction”); perhaps via Old Khmer nibbāna (“nirvāṇa: final beatitude achieved through emancipation from the cycle of rebirth by extinction of the passions”).

Compare Old Khmer nirbvāṇa, nirbvāna, nirbāna, nirabāna, nirrabāna, nibvāṇa, nibvāna; Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer nirvvāṇa; Angkorian Old Khmer nirvvāṇa, nirvāṇa. And compare Sanskrit निर्वाण (nirvāṇa).

Cognate with Modern Khmer និវ៌ាណ (nĭវ៌ាណ), Khmer និព្វាន (nɨppiən), Khmer និរពាន (nipiən).
