From Pali gaṅgā or Sanskrit गङ्गा (gaṅgā, literally “one who goes swiftly; one who flows rapidly”). Cognate with Khmer គង្គ (kŭəngkĕəʼ), គង្គា (kŭəngkiə); Lao ຄົງຄາ (khong khā), ກັງກາ (kang kā); Burmese ဂင်္ဂါ (gangga).
